Portable Hard Drives

Our pick

LaCie Mobile Drive (2022) 5TB

Choose the LaCie Mobile Drive 5TB for a portable file archive with a direct USB-C cable and included recovery support.12

Why this one

  • Its 5 TB capacity and exFAT format suit a large archive shared across compatible computers. The included USB-C cable avoids the Type-A adapter setup supplied with the WD My Passport Works with USB-C 6TB.123
  • LaCie includes three years of Rescue recovery service, separate from its three-year hardware warranty. Check service availability where you live, and keep another backup of important files.24

Other contenders

  • WD My Passport Ultra for Mac WDBKYJ0020BSL

Choose the WD My Passport Ultra for Mac 2TB if that capacity is enough and carrying weight matters: it is about 159 g, compared with 300 g for the LaCie 5TB. Check your computers’ file-system requirements before buying the Mac version.26

  • WD My Passport, Works with USB-C (6TB)

Choose the WD My Passport Works with USB-C 6TB when capacity comes first. It holds 1 TB more than the LaCie and weighed about 218 g in the cited review; its drive port is Micro-B, with a Type-A cable and a Type-C adapter.1311

Buying advice

  • Choose enough capacity for your files and backup growth, then check the cable, ports and file-system support on your computers. A rated interface or read speed does not establish the speed of a whole backup.12

For keeping data safe if the drive is lost

The WD My Passport Works with USB-C supports hardware encryption. Before relying on it, check the password setup, unlock software and operating-system support for every computer you will use.812 Choose the 6TB variant if you need that capacity, and configure its protection before copying sensitive files. Included encryption hardware alone does not establish that your files are protected.1112
